Hello from Sri Lanka

sam and holly

A personal apology and explanation from me as to why we haven't been in contact with you for a few months

Dogstar's office and team are all based in Negombo, which was one of the cities devastated by the Easter bombings. Although we are all physically okay, as a team, we suffered losses in our networks of friends and family. Some of our team have understandably needed additional support and counselling.

Thanks to the fantastic team at Dogs Trust Worldwide our mobile spay-neuter programs could restart after a 2-week suspension, this is a vital program which tackles suffering at the root cause. Our local community was delighted to see us return as many feared we would have left the country permanently.

Your donations have been a lifeline for so many hungry, sick and injured dogs over the last few months

Negombo is a city that depends on Tourism and that industry collapsed overnight after many foreign countries introduced travel restrictions, presenting us with some unique challenges.

With many local people who usually feed street dogs out of work and no tourists, many dogs faced a food crisis. We have been working quietly behind the scenes with many local establishments and hotels to monitor and support these street dogs as needed. Sadly its clear some pets have also been strayed as a result as owners felt they could no longer care for them. We also have been working with a local human charity that runs a "foodbank" and donating animal feed to them to help keep pets and families together.

At the same time, there was an unprecedented demand for our services we suffered a loss of income due to the lack of tourists, it been a difficult time.

I want to thank you for your support; the many messages we received have been a lifeline in what has probably been our most challenging year here to date. Without the kindness of so many of you, I don't know how we would have managed the first few weeks.

I have always said Dogstar is a small charity that does big things and at its heart is a family, a global family of people of different ages and genders living in different countries, speaking many different languages, some of you know us and our beautiful Island home personally, and some have yet to visit us. We all have one thing in common, we all believe that the beautiful street dogs here in Sri Lanka deserve the same treatment, love and care as our pets and we all believe in kindness and compassion over hate and discord.

Over the next few weeks, we will be asking you for your feedback on our newsletters, social media communications and our website. We want you to know just how much your donations help the dogs (and cats ) here, and that's something I don't think we have always expressed as well as we could.

Once again, my heartfelt thanks to you for being an essential part of the Dogstar journey to date. The animals and I really look forward to your company on our future path.
