Rabies eradication program

Rabies is one of the world’s most deadly and feared diseases.

Rabies is an infectious viral disease which is endemic in Sri Lanka and once an animal or human develops symptoms death is inevitable, but it does not have to be this way as Rabies is a vaccine preventable disease.

Mass Rabies Vaccination Programs

The World Health Organisation ( WHO ) advises that mass canine vaccination programs are the most effective measure for eradicating rabies and that vaccinating 70% of the dogs in an area is necessary to control the disease in both humans and dogs.

Mission Rabies Sri Lanka

Dogstar Foundation is working in partnership with Mission Rabies to do just that here in Sri Lanka.  Using the Mission Rabies App on a smartphone, we record the GPS location of every Rabies vaccination given, dogs gender, sterilization status and body condition and mark the Dogs marked with temporary paint after a rabies vaccination drive dog with a temporary paint marker.  Allowing us to conduct scientific evidence based re-sight surveys to ensure our programs achieve the desired coverage.  During the 2015 and 2016 mass vaccination program in  Negombo, we vaccinated over 12000 dogs achieving a 77 % immunization coverage.
