The Dogstar Foundation believe that Sri Lanka can become rabies free within a generation, we are working towards that goal by providing free Rabies Vaccinations to all animals that attend our sterilization clinics, to temple, community and companion dogs and cats via a series of vaccination initiatives.

Between Feb 2007 and October 2009 The Dogstar Foundation vaccinated over 1700 animals against Rabies. Even with fluctuating exchange rates it can cost as little as £1.66 to vaccinate a dog or cat against Rabies for a year.

The Dogstar Foundation is proud to be an outreach partner working with Alliance for Rabies Control and supporting World Rabies Day on September 28th each year ( Which is also Dogstars birthday ) in 2009 at our World Rabies Day event we ran a free sterilisation and vaccination clinic attended by this young owner and his dog

Funding Research

In  2007 – 2008 the Dogstar Foundation funded a study examining the levels of antibody titer protection in street dogs against Rabies. This was carried out by the Veterinary Clinic Sciences Department at the University of Peradeniya.  The completed research paper on risk of rabies in the Hanthana area near Kandy – was presented at a 2 day symposium on disasters at Bandaranayke Memorial International Conference Hall Colombo on 7th July 2009.

In May 2010 the Dogstar Foundation agreed to fund and support a follow up study

• To study the current numbers and their distribution of stray dogs in Hanthana area.
• To investigate attitudes and public awareness of people in the study area towards stray dogs after performing Sterilization and Vaccination in the year 2008.
• To observe behavior pattern of stray dogs on to weekdays and weekends.
• To determine the  antibody titers against rabies virus among stray dog population in the study area.
