Donkeystar Update 17th June
Posted by Volunteer on June 17, 2012
“Donkeystar” Mannar urban Donkeys.
During Sam’s recent trip to Mannar to work with their colleagues at TAPA for a spay neuter clinic she discovered that Mannar is also home to approx. 1000 wild donkeys , whilst many in the rural areas seem to be healthy over 350 live in the urban… area ( recent census data from Diaspora Lanka ) and many are in very poor condition.
Dogstar’s Sam has met with Diaspora Lanka ( a human NGO working in Mannar who are also very concerned about the donkeys ) and has committed to help, Dogstar’s good friends at World Veterinary Service have also offered to assist Dogstar If you would like to help you can donate via Dogstar’s donkey appeal here.

Mother and baby outside our guest house eating a carrot we supplied , they spend most of the day grazing on the land which in the dry season is almost barren.

A large number of the Urban Donkeys are found eating rubbish on scrub land such as this.

One of the Donkeys looking for food
Plastic bags , rubbish and fabric seem to make up a large ammout of their diet.

Plastic, not a good diet for a Donkey!
This is about 1km outside the town centre.

Donkey and street dog at bus station , from what we could tell the bag contained left over curry and rice.
